Guidelines for Outdoor Memorials

 

  • General
    • All gift requests should be submitted to the Assistant Director of Custodial and Landscape Services or designee.
    • The University will not guarantee to maintain any gift of plaque in perpetuity.
    • All landscape gifts, their placement and specifications require approval from the Assistant Director of Custodial and Landscape Services.
    • Donors are responsible for all costs of the gift and plaque. The cost to the donor for each gift item will be recommended by the Assistant Director of Custodial and Landscape Services and approved by the Director of Physical Facilities.
  • Plaques
    • Memorial plaques must be in recognition of an individual person that is deceased and should contain the individual's name, dates of birth and death, and may also recognize the individual's relationship with the Missouri University of Science and Technology and a short reflection about that individual.
    • Wording is limited to ten lines with forty spaces and letters per line.
    • Any wording differentiating from the above requires the approval of the Director of Physical Facilities or designee. The University reserves the right to accept, edit, or reject in full or part, text for plaques if the same is deemed contrary to the mission of or detrimental to the University of Missouri.
    • Individual plaques should be bronze, measuring 8" x 12" and mounted in a concrete base. Plaques for benches may be 8 " x 4 " and mounted on or beneath the bench.
  • Trees
    • The size, species, location and condition of gift trees, will be approved by the Assistant Director of Custodial and Landscape Services. No tree or plant may be planted without prior approval. Gifts in kind must also meet these criteria
    • Trees will be maintained and replaced by Landscape Services as long as they deem practical. Landscape Services may opt to replace the tree with another species if circumstances warrant.
  • Benches and other amenities
    • Benches purchased shall be the campus standard, a six or eight foot concrete bench. Any other bench or amenity must be approved by Landscape Services.
    • All benches are to be mounted on a concrete pad that exceeds twelve inches beyond the sides and back of the bench and twenty-four inches in front. It must be a minimum of twenty-four inches off the existing sidewalks.
